Ulysses - The Greatest Book Ever Written
Author:Russell Shortt
Ulysses is considered as one of the most important works of modernist literature, it chronicles the travails of the main protagonists, Leopold Bloom and Stephen Dadelaus on an ordinary day in Dublin on 16 June 1904. It’s stream of consciousness technique, crafty structuring, experimental prose, diverse vocabulary, rich characters and satirical qualities have made the work one of the most well regarded books ever written. It is divided into eighteen chapters or episodes, each of which has as assigned theme, technique and correspondences between characters in Ulysses and characters in the Odyssey.
The novel was written between 1914-1921, it was initially published in series in the American publication The Little Review from 1918 until it’s prosecution for obscenity in 1921. The first edition of the book was published in 1922 by Sylvia Beach at Shakespeare and Company in Paris. Every year on 16 June, which is known as Bloomsday, there are huge celebrations in Dublin in honour of Joyce and his book which depicted the city so accurately. People dress up in the costumes of the day, cite his readings, debate the text, argue the intricacies and puzzles of the book and generally do everything Joycean for the day.
Dublin has indeed changed much in the century since the book was written but many of the places and landmarks featured in Ulysses can still be found. These include the Martello Tower where the novel begins and which is now a museum to the great writer and Davy Byrnes pub, 21 Duke St., Dublin 2 still stands to this day.
